R.E.M., The Rose Bowl

IN their 90s heyday, they were dubbed the Kings of College Rock.

They've grown up a bit since then, but last night R.E.M. proved they are still a force to be reckoned with as they rocked Hampshire's Rose Bowl.

The three-piece bounded onto stage for the start of an energetic set which put even their impressive support bands Editors and Guillemots immediately in the shade.

The tour could have so easily been an almighty flop. The £45 base ticket price surely kept many away with the Cardiff date being moved from the Millennium Stadium to the Inter-national Arena because of sluggish sales.

The Rose Bowl was probably not a great deal more than half as full compared to the more than 30,000 people who went to the now legendary Oasis date in the summer of 2005, but those that were there had a ball.

The fact is, it is not 1995 and R.E.M., although still big, are not the biggest band in the world any more. But nearly three decades on from their humble beginnings in the school halls of Athens, Georgia, and with the boost of an induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their acclaimed latest album Accelerate, they are enjoying something of a renaissance.

This was an exciting and politically charged set which saw frontman Michael Stipe berate the current US administration and the British weather.

Stipe switched from serious to silly in seconds with plenty of his trademark, amazing gravelly voice, eccentric dance moves, wit and charisma.

The tempo was high throughout until beautiful slower versions of Nightswimming and Let Me In.

While racing through tracks from their new album, the band kept the crowd happy with some classics from their 28-year career including crowd favourite The One I Love.

Probably their biggest hit, Shiny Happy People was conspicuous by its absence. Apparently in these rockier times, the guys are a little embarrassed about playing this punchy pop anthem.

Fabulous encores of Losing My Religion, and Man On The Moon set to amazing graphics were met with mad dancing and rapturous applause.

The back to basics 14th album appears to have been just the boost REM needed. The band seemed to be back to their best.

Had their day this lot haven't they?
Couldn't give tickets away in Cardiff.
It was like watching an old dog dying a painful death last night.
(I only went as I was given a ticket. I wasn't silly enough to pay 45 quid).

That's because the Welsh only have Tom Jones, Royal Albert Hall sold out in an hour in March, you dont last 25 years in the music business unless you have huge market appeal.

Fantastic show, the end to the set was awesome.

45 quid a steal having watched Meatloafs shocking effort at Broadlands.

OCEAN VILLAGE RESIDENT.......
I feel you must have been watching a different concert to all the other people at the rosebowl last night. I for one am not a dedicated REM fan, but felt it was a good gig, and am glad that we did spend the money. I feel for you but hopefully you'll get more tickets given to you and actually go to enjoy yourself, instead of just being a miserable moaning ol' sod. YOU DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR YOU PAID NOTHING YOU GOT NOTHING. As regards to cardiff and the band not selling tickets there, well who in their right mind wants to go to Wales.
Cheer up and mental note, if you dont like the people giving a concert, DONT GO. Let someone go who knows what a good time is.

When it comes to major music events you wouldn't put Wales on your list now would you ?

It was an error on their part to put that venue on their schedule but they wanted to showcase their music to the whole of the UK. They won't make that mistake again.

May I ask what your cup of tea is, then we can all decide whether your opinion is worth anything ?

Quite the anti-Welsh brigade aren't we?

"As regards to cardiff and the band not selling tickets there, well who in their right mind wants to go to Wales."

Shall we commence the debate about the proud history of the Arms Park and Millennium Stadium hosting some of the biggest names in music history to full-houses or shall we discuss the global appeal of a sparsely populated cricket ground?

After you...I'm all ears...

Yep just the 20,000 dotted about here and there. I asked you a question, you going to answer it or are you just going to argue the Welsh point ad nauseum ?

Your whole credibility rests on the answer you give, not Tom Jones is it..........

Like quite a few of the previous people on here I'm at a loss to understand the attitude and acid comments made about last nights gig at the Rose Bowl. Okay, yes the tickets were a tad pricey BUT it was for a 5hr show featuring two current bands and one, dare I say it rock super group (be it progressive, indie, or even pop - they do it all!) - I never thought I'd see the day that REM would come to this apparently sleepy backwater of Hampshire.

Admittedly I'm a fan of REM and have grown up with them during a large part of my 41 years but I still thought the whole evening provided excellent value for money (considering most music tickets even locally at the Guilhall's and BIC cost in the region of £20-35 these days) and REM still showed how a show should be put on!

If you're not in to this style of music (and how can you not be with three groups like this!) then why bother going? You may just as well haved stayed at home and help to reduce the congestion in the area! As a previous reviewer stated, you don't last over 25 years in the music industry without doing something right!

It was for me a fabulous evening, one that will live long in the memory. The one sad note for me was the number of people filing out of the stadium whilst the band were still performing (presumably to 'get an early start' and avoid the ensuing congestion and not as a reflection of the bands performance). Whilst I appreciate that everyone has paid for their ticket and as such has the right to leave when they feel it, surely more is lost than gained by leaving early especially after paying £45 for the privilege? It's certainly beyond me! I just hope the band were unaware of the slopers-off and will feel suitably encouraged by those who did stay to the end to come back and visit again.

I saw REM on this tour at Manchester (which was packed) and they were awesome. Believe me as someone who has followed them for 20-odd years and has seen them live a number of times, they are in great form and those of you at the Rosebowl last night can count yourselves priviliged. I thought they would never better the performance they gave on the '95 Monster tour but they have at least matched it this week. I think the problem with attendances is the price of the tickets. £45 (plus booking fees etc, taking it over £50) is a staggering amount, especially in these times and I can see affordability being a problem unless you are a really dedicated fan. It even made us think twice but I am glad we felt it was worth it.

Well i feel all this is missing the point!
Point is I don't agree with the gentlemans view of last night. I thought REM were superb.
And pretty much everyone I saw there last night had a great time.
The Rose bowl is a new Venue, but Oasis, Neil Diamond and REM have seen fit to play there, so its popularity is being enhanced with the passage of time (And Hampshire Cricket have long, long history. Northlands road). Also remember the Rose Bowl is fundamentaly a cricket ground which has gained One day international status and is close to Test match status. Pretty good going really in short space of time.
Agree re Millenium stadium etc, but the learned viewpoint is surely (not Shirley Bassey) watch this space for what the future brings. Sure the Arms Park when it Opened didn't get the stars of the day immediately.
I have been to Earls Court for a top gig, and that was half full. Partly due to the growing scourge of Touts, not necessarily a reflection on artist or venue. Please also consider Police issues/instructions of limitation of attendees due to Health and Safety issues at the Rose Bowl also. The place is still finding its feet as a music venue.

I am very proud of the Rose Bowl, being a cricket fan, a music fan, and a resident of Southampton. So I won't slag Wales of, but would respectfully ask that my home town is not insulted as well. For info my Dads family are from Blackwood. Have a look at a map.

Most important thing about last night. I had a great night as did the majority, from what I saw. Cheers.

Superb gig. I must admit I did not notice those sloping off early as the band saved some of their classics until the end. Fantastic energy, graphics & lighting from the band.

What a great night it was last night. It was our 12 year old son's first live gig and he has been a fan of REM since very small. It was probably hard to avoid as he spent his formative years having REM played in house and car! He thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a great way to introduce him to live music.
Yes the tickets were pricey, but the venue was great and was easy to move around without worrying about my son's safety.
We saw REM in Cardiff in 95 and they have not lost it at all. It truly was an awesome set and some of the more modern bands could learn a thing or two from them.
We thought it money well spent and were home in Shirley within 40 mins of REM finishing - a real bonus!
Editors were brilliant too.

What a fantastic show last night by REM, and right on our doorsteps! People both old and young (many younger than me at 28!) seemed to lap up the music which I was surprised about, especially as many younger people think stuff like theirs is 'uncool'.

We were stood to the left side, adjacent to the sound tent. I did notice quite a few people starting to leave a couple of songs from the end. All I can say is that you missed a some great classics just to get away a little quicker!

The only thing that ruined the night was the chaos at the 'Park and Walk' car park across the road. The so-called car park wardens didn't seem to have any form of control over the traffic trying to leave, causing an every-man-for-himsel
f situation! Parked in row 9 we were sat there for around 20 minutes and didn't move anywhere! I'm not proud but I decided to cut the queue and got out 15 minutes before my brother who waited! £12 well spent for parking!

Totally worth it though for the music, lighting and effects creating a great, happy and buzzing atmosphere!

Great nite, great concert, and my Seventeen year old loves REM almost as much as I do. They still have what it takes.Thing I loved most is not getting hassled by people selling merchandise, and the few unofficial Tshirt sellers that there were, were not doing much business. Power to REM!

Thought the show was fab. My friends and I had a great time. Would have loved to hear a few more of the old songs. Good to see bigger bands at Southampton. Oh even the weather was alright. What more can you ask for.

As someone who has now seen REM 4 times, including at the Millenium Stadium and Earls Court, i thought last night topped the lot. Ok yes, it was a samller venue and not packed out, but this just gave those of us there the chance to enjoy the night and actually see what is going on as well as listening to great music. I had a great time and think REM are as good as they ever were. My boyfirend who is not a huge REM fan also thought they were great. The atmosphere was just as good as the larger venues and it was great that it was closer to home. Well worth the money, and for those of your moaning, at least we won't see you next time!

What an awesome gig!!
There aren't many bands who mix old and new quite as well as REM. I have seen them 5 times now since '95 and the oldies have been different every time. How many other bands would have the confidence in their back catalogue to suddenly produce a track from their debut album!!? And not a well known one either.
Thoroughly entertaining as usual and quite simply blew the support away, in a nice way.
The Ocean Village bloke is entitled to his opinion, no matter how deluded.

yeah good gig all in all....LOUD - my highlight was 7 Chinese brothers. They have played these parts you know - May 1989 at Portsmouth Guildhall on the Green Tour. My first gig and unbelievably good. Have been a fan ever since, but the fading memory is so good that I've always been slightly disappointed every time I've seen REM since

REM were quite simply FANTASTIC!

The whole set was superb, I enjoyed every song many of which I had never heard before. I am not an avid REM fan and had lost touch with what they have been doing (my memories are from Out of Time and the 80's!), but I really enjoyed it all. Stipe particularly was very entertaining and as for the sound, the best I have heard yet at the Rose Bowl. The Who were good too but I thought the sound last night was first class.

REM's performance last night has rejuvenated my interest in this great band.

So glad I went, one of the highlights of a very bad summer.

Editors really good too.

Absolutely bloomin' BRILLIANT. My first gig since the epic Bon Jovi gig at St Mary's in June, and I was NOT disappointed.

I went with a friend, and we had so much fun all the way through. I'm definitely interested in checking out the Guillemots following their performance, but overall the night was, as it was meant to be, R.E.M's. I didn't even mind buying an official tour t-shirt. £20 was a reasonable price, considering what t-shirts cost even in shops today!

It was a fantastic evening, and I'd love to go and see them again. ♥
