Bon Jovi rock St Mary's with a Prayer
IT was one of the greatest performances
I've seen at St Mary's in a long
time.
Bon Jovi gave an on-pitch display
Saints would have been rightly proud of
- worthy of a title, not a relegation battle.
Well they are not known as the best
live stadium band in the world for nothing.
But it was a fairly lack-lustre start by
Bon Jovi standards as they began with
two tracks from their latest album Lost
Highway, supposedly the reason for this
worldwide jaunt. That was until the ever
energetic Jon gave the rest of the band
a telling off for enjoying a vacation
rather than preparation ahead of their
first UK show in Southampton last night.
They knew just what the crowd wanted
and from then on it was one classic
after another from the back catalogue.
And what a back catalogue.
Click for photos from the gig
Keep the
Faith,You Give Love a Bad Name,
Runaway, It's My Life and Have a Nice
Day were all there. But it was a medley
including Bad Medicine and Livin on a
Prayer which received the most rapturous
reception from a vocal crowd.
They sandwiched an amazing version
of Shout which was far better received
than when it was performed by Lulu
during Elton John's visit in 2005.
The crowd had enjoyed sunshine during
the set of Southampton band
HourstilAutumn, who opened for their
heroes after winning a competition.
As the sun went down the forecast
rain arrived. Very few minded though
after a sexy Jon promised a shower for
35,000 people.
See a short clip taken by a fan at the stadium
Bon Jovi are the returning heroes of
two summers ago and their live shows
are hard to beat.
Exceptional musicianship is fused
with sensational stadium rock and a set
to dazzle.
In and two-and-a-quarter hour show,
which drew to a close with rousing
encores of Always and Wanted Dead or
Alive, Jon even managed to pay tribute
to our local heroes.
He hoped for better future fortunes for
the Saints.
Some might say that would be living
on prayer but I will certainly keep the
faith.

An absolutely fantastic performance, even better than when they were here last in 2006! The boys have definitely still got it, although unsurprisingly, their back catalogue was much more well received than the new stuff. Not so sure about Hourstilautumn though, sorry - I hate to think what the rest of the competition was like if these are the guys who won...

The boys blew me away last night. That would be the 5th time I have seen them and they get better and better! Awesome....the best live gig in the world. They played what we wanted to hear and come on stage without delay,Everything about it was superb!
Shame about the support act...sorry!

What a racket, I was onto the Council Noise people but they claimed they couldn't do anythign about it.
I think we should all petition the council for the right to have the sound turned down after 9:00pm. Outrageous.

This is the second time i have seen bon jovi play at Southampton, and i thought they were awwesome. Well worth any kind of money. They had me jumping around all night, screaming their songs on the top of my voice. My highlight was when Richie Sambora came runing up the side of the stage, what a sexy dude I just love that man. Would pay to see him alone. Can't wait for the next bon jovi gig. Bring it on boys. YOU ROCK!!!!
Sally needs to be shot for her comment about bon jovi, NO WAY was the ametuer band better than them. They were just that.... Ametuers!

However it extended my normal 20 minute journey home across town to 1hr and 15 minutes..
I just can't wait for the next major concert....

As always a stellar performance from from the band. I have tickets to all 7 of their UK performances but I reckon southampton will take some beating - to all those who thought they were bad, methinks it was the crowd and not the band. I have seen them in excess of 20 times & this was the hardest they have had to work to get a reaction from a seemingly lifeless crowd (only the additional gig he did at the KC Stadium in hull was worse!) I stood next to a couple who failed to put their hands together once - I thought they were statues! A live performace is only as good as the crowd.

I sat in my garden listening to it. I thought I was in the stadium as it was so loud. Sounded like a great concert though, mind you I could mainly hear the crowd so there was obviously a tremendous atmosphere.
Hope you all enjoyed it, I did and wasn't even there!

I had a great night, i felt that for a local band that haven't played to a crowed that big before they were brilliant, and for those saying other local bands were better they either did not enter the competition or were not better otherwise they would have won!
Bon Jovi was also awesome, the energy in the crowed showed how good it was. all together i thought that this was a fantastic night!

I agree with Drew, Hourstilautumn did so well to play to the whole of St Mary's Stadium and whoever was there and turned up with the 'support bands are ****' attitude need to buck their ideas and give them a chance, because they won the competition because they deserved too and well done to all of them, they were so good!

My first Bon Jovi Concert and definetely not my last.
Had a fanstantic night sung (well screamed) and waved and clapped my hands like a mad woman.
We were sitting to left of stage 5 rows back so had great view over everyones heads and the sound was spot on.
They still have it :o)

Last night's concert was superb. The band were excellent and rocked St Mary's. There was plenty of notice that this gig was occurring so those locals complaining (you should be ashamed of yourselves really) had plenty of oppo to go out for the night/find other ways home etc. Its not like concerts happen there every night and maybe you should think of the benefits that it brings to the city and get a life. The support band weren't the best but I certainly give them credit for having the balls to get up there and play in front of all those people. Great concert, great night out.

I really enjoyed the gig and the sound was excellent where we were standing in the middle of the pitch, I guess itmay not have been as good if you were in the stands. It was a fantastic gig. Only criticism would be the utter lack of organisation upon exiting the stadium and the dreadful support band. Yes they had guts to get up there and do it but at £45.00 a ticket you expect a decent well known name up there. When I saw them in 94 at Wembley they had Van Halen and Thunder in support, a bit better than last night's effort!

My daughter lives opposite the stadium and had to move her car from Bannister road - why?
To add insult to injury - the mayors car was illegally parked on the pavement outside the ground.
The stadium is a commercial enterprise - why must the local residents suffer so they can make some money? - There is a simple solution, give them some parking permits.

Well, the energy and musician ship of the band is beyond question. But that sound system needs someone to take a look at it before they play Manchester, London etc. Dull guitar riffs, mikes fading in and out.. The band were great but the sound less so. Disappointed with no proper support. We were told by the merchandising people Biffy Clyro were suporting (T-shirts on sale) but dont know where they got to.
Having said all that my Mrs and daughter LOVED it, so if they are happy I am! Have a nice day and Wanted were the highlights for me. Overll 8/10. Not as good as last time in 2006.

It was awesome, it was my second bonjovi concert, the 1st being nearly 15 years ago, and all I can say is that I hope I have that much energy in 10 years time!! Jon played to the crowd superbly, and looked to me (from back right corner) that they all were thouroghly enjoying themselves! I certainly shall be seeing them again, hopefully they will come back to Southampton, the Acoustics were perfect!!

Thought Bon Jovi were good, but so dissapointed that they didnt sing Bed of roses
:(
Sound and atmosphere was not good from where we were sat up in the stands. If going again i would go for standing down on the pitch.
Sorry but didnt go much on the local band. Have to hand it to them for performing in front of such a huge crowd though.
Where was our big support act??..last time it was Nickleback!! Heard we were going to get the Feeling..but then found out that apparently they are only performing at some of the venues..totally unfair considering we paid the same amount of money!

Not so sure about Hourstilautumn though, sorry - I hate to think what the rest of the competition was like if these are the guys who won...[/quote] [quote]quote[/quote] Hourstilautumn were the better band there I have to say. Yeah they won and they deserved to win cause theyre amazing. Lets see you do better.[/quote] [quote]Not sure Southampton are worthy; I stood next to some statues too and felt I needed to compensate for their lack lustre support; why stand to watch one of the best live bands in the world and not move an inch; it's supposed to be FUN for goodness sake; the support band were probably quite good but the sound was terrible so came came across really badly. I have seen BJ 4 previous times with some superb support bands, Top Loader, Delirius and Matchbox 20 at Milton Keynes so next time Southampton do them justice please and we'll be back again. [/quote]

[bold]Unforgettable[/bold] , that's how I'd describe the concert yesterday. I'm originally from Brazil and have always been a fan of Bon Jovi, it was the first time ever a saw them and a dream come true, very emotional! They still got it, and only Jon to move the crownd like he did! Was worth avery single penny and I'd pay again and again! [bold]BON JOVI ROCKS[/bold] !

Awesome evening at St Marys, better than two years ago. Really enjoyed our family night at the concert. Its just a shame that the council had to ruin it by shutting three lanes of traffic down to just one at millbrook, and what is the most annoying, there weren't even working on that particular road, they were working on the millbrook roundabout.

Can I clear a few things up about last nights support act, Hourstilauntumn.
To begin with the largest gig they have played would have been to no more than 150 people, so 35,000 is a large leap for them, and takes tremendous courage.
Next, they were origionally going to be second support to the feeling, who couldn't be arsed to play, so 3 hours before playing the biggest gig of their life they had to turn a 15 minute set into a 45 minute set. Which clearly takes alot of maturity and courage for four lads who are only 19-21.
Personally they were great ambassadors to the local music scene and yes they aren't Nickleback or The Feeling i appreciate that but everyone has to start somewhere.
I would just like all the people above, who's honest I respect, to take a second to think if they would have had the **** to get on stage in front of that many people......
Thank you.

Absolutely awesome gig from Bon Jovi last night, thoroughly enjoyed myself, congratulations to the pompey meathead who got owned by the stewards, you know who you are (although someone will have to read this to you you sad illiterate ****), the one withe the white hat, stripey chavved up pompey shirt, Keeley tatood on the back of his fat neck and the biggest hair lip I ever did see.
For those of you who didnt get the opportunity to see this moron in action, when asked to put out his cigarette very politely by one of the stewards he proceeded to swear and square up to the guy telling him he was going to smash his face in etc etc, he then cleverly left the arena (probably to go get noshed off in the gents) but decided to square up to the steward again, he was subsequently restrained on the floor just outside the grounds and was arrested the whole time screaming like the little girl that he is, stewards I applaud you, job well done, meathead pompey ****, getting owned in Southampton whilst screamong like a ****, the chavvy pompey supporters community will probably disown you after reading the truth as opposed to the hardman crap that you have probably spent the day feeding them. you are a dick! OWNED!

i gotta agree with joe on this, its not HourstilAutumns fault, they deserve everyone that was not happy to give them another chance!
they are playing talkingheads tonight in southampton, for those who enjoyed them like myself would be good to see you, along with those who need to give them another chance

It was not Hourstilautumns fault that whoever did the organisation of last night did not organise a 'big' act too. Like you say not many lads that age would have had the courage to stand up alone as the only support act to Bon Jovi.

[italic]To all of you who dissed the concert - are you planning a carer as journalists?[/italic]
These are normally the only people who bad mouth a jovi live performance.
The show was brilliant. Jon (singer) read my sign requesting always, they left the stage, and when they came back they sang the song. I blew Richie (guitarist) a kiss and he blew one back.
They were fantastic. The people around me were clapping and singing the whole way through & there was lots of screaming (cant tell where from).
Sounds like I was lucky to be where I was - bad crowd = bad atmosphere which means that you might as well be listening to a cd or watching a dvd.
[bold]The support for Southampton was never going to be the feeling!!![/bold] It was never confirmed as the feeling. Up until a few days ago we didnt know who the support band was & even then I had never heard of Biffy Clifdo or whoever they are.
I think some of you need to come out from behind your sofa & admit to liking them.
Roll on next tour!

Great gig again by Bon Jovi, I dont need to go into how good they were!
HourstilAutumn were probably better than most of the local bands on the 2006 tour. The sound wasnt brilliant for them, but the last few songs sounded very good indeed, and indeed their myspace page is worth a look as it sounded better than the stadium could do justice. Shame the main support act, be it The Feeling or Biffy Clyro, never played.
Only negative- why do Southampton always make it so difficult to get to/from? Id love to find the moron who decided putting 3 lanes down to 1 on the exit road to the M27 and shake him by the neck. Lunacy.

Not my cup of tea, really, but it's still good to see a band actually playing Southampton for a change. Hope they blaze a trail for some more big acts. Van Halen, anyone?
But what's with all the slagging off of anyone who didn't enjoy it? Surely it's not mandatory to like everything. Personally, I couldn't give two hoots if anyone else dislikes something I like. That's why it's called [bold]my[/bold] musical taste

This was my 4th Bon Jovi concert and my hubby's 1st. The guys have still got it going on. They were brilliant as usual and we will definately go see them again. We couldnt believe the people who sat down all the way through the gig. We had some next to us and I did start to think they may be dead! I suggest next time they stay at home with a hot chocolate and leave the real fans to rock the night away with the guys!!! BON JOVI FOREVER.

Next, they were origionally going to be second support to the feeling, who couldn\'t be arsed to play, so 3 hours before playing the biggest gig of their life they had to turn a 15 minute set into a 45 minute set. Which clearly takes alot of maturity and courage for four lads who are only 19-21. Personally they were great ambassadors to the local music scene and yes they aren\'t Nickleback or The Feeling i appreciate that but everyone has to start somewhere. I would just like all the people above, who\'s honest I respect, to take a second to think if they would have had the **** to get on stage in front of that many people...... Thank you. [/quote] You are quite right when you say that everyone has to start somewhere. It was not Hourstilautumns fault that whoever did the organisation of last night did not organise a \'big\' act too. Like you say not many lads that age would have had the courage to stand up alone as the only support act to Bon Jovi. [/quote] It’s AEG live fault about the support (i heard they meant it be 15 min for local comp winners then support, then bon j), i guess it did take courage to step in and there and his voice nerves did calm down after 1/2 way in,
Negatives were had friends up in the seating who were behind the stage ! could only see side speakers block 28 some were they got to move when complained after long wait, wish they had the walk way like 2006, but they still got it , hope they do another world tour stop in again !! gold circle need to be smaller to much of a gap to the real fans !!!

Wow! What a lot of negative comments,I was there last night and thought it was fantastic, but if I were Jon Bon Jovi I'd be having serious doubts as to whether I'd be coming back to a bunch of ungrateful whingers like like some of you! If you don't like Bon Jovi then don't buy a ticket to see them, and let us true fans buy the tickets, we appreciate what they do. Ok so we pay alot for the tickets and yes we expect our moneys worth but you have to join in and enjoy yourself, not just stand there like a lemon! I was in the gold circle and the atmosphere there was amazing BUT where was the build up to Jon arriving on stage? Seen them 5 times now and this was the first time Jon walked onto the stage with no video screen footage first to get the crowd going, and why was Bed of Roses left out of the setlist? Anyway, they're still an amazing band to see live and they really do put everything they've got into their performances, Jon is SO full of energy and he seems to get quite emotional over some songs, when he sang ALWAYS last night I just had to stand and watch, it was really emotional.I'm going to Twickenham soon and can't wait, and I'll be there when they tour again - if they come back to this miserable whinging country!

If you automatically like everything a band does, you're really not doing them justice. It can't be very satisfying for a band to know that the crowd only "liked" the gig because they felt it would be ungrateful not to, rather than because the band actually put on a good show. I've been in bands in the past, and sometimes you play well, sometimes you don't. Sometimes people like you, sometimes they don't. Simple as that. If the fans can't be honest and say when they didn't like something, how are the band ever going to know what to improve?
It [bold]is[/bold] possible to like a band and still not enjoy a particular gig, or like a particular album. I've seen loads of bands, and seen many of them several times. Not a single one of those has impressed me on [italic]every single occasion[/italic], but that doesn't make me like the band any less

Well, everyone, you can thank Louise, she's ruined it for you all!

Always see Jovi but first time at Southampton, and last. Sound was awful in the stands and definitely not going to another first nighter again either, the boys were out of touch. Found it very hard to sing along as all we could hear was a booming base...so perhaps we were that couple they thought were dead????!!! Hope they improve for the rest of the tour.

Best night ever! I went with my 2 sisters and we thought Bon Jovi was amazing! Shame about all the party poopers in the crowd, didnt ruin our night. We were near the stage, cannot believe how many people werent singing or dancing, what a boring lot! Why bother going, leave tickets for us real fans to buy! Cant wait to see them again! Just hope he wears his leather pants next time!

as a general fan, nothing major, i was really really impressed with the music, it was my first stadium gig and yes the sound quality is never as good but give credit to the band, with their millions and their adoring fans itd be easy for them to give a lacklustre performance at the sight of a boring crowd, but nonetheless jon and richie never looked like tiri
