LOCAL BANDS... with Xan Phillips from Original 106FM

WE are really pushing the limits of our studios these next three weeks on the original Showcase.

The three bands we have in session are not only stepping out of their comfort zone but we are also using every bit of equipment and space we have.

Normally a soloist or duo are our chosen performers for ease and speed but these bands have a full on sound and need to be recorded as a whole.

All three come from Southampton: Idiot 3 and Subgiant fill slots two and three while this Sunday we'll have electric blues band Chicago 9 performing in an acoustic style.

They normally play fully amplified but for just this once have agreed to make do with out electricity.

When I asked singer/guitarist Mark Nolan (pictured, second left) if they would consider playing acoustically in the future he quickly and empathically replied: "No!" And then added: "It's a completely different dynamic than playing an electric line-up and basically that's what I have always done. All the songs have been written with a band in mind, with an electric guitar solo and that's the way I like to do it."

However, I think the songs come across really well in both loud and acoustic states and that says something about the quality of the songs.

You can judge for yourself this Sunday after 6pm on original 106.
