Mercury rises for local duo
A "POST JAZZ" quartet which features the talents of two Southampton bred musicians has been nominated for this year's prestigious Mercury Music Prize.
Saxophonist Jack Wyllie and double bass player Milo Fitzpatrick from the Portico Quartet will be up against the likes of Radiohead, Estelle, Last Shadow Puppets and Adele.
The south London-based Portico Quartet, who signed to the Babel/Vortex label last summer, were nominated for their acclaimed Knee Deep In The North Sea debut album.
Jack and Milo, who both went to Cantell School and grew up in Highfield, yesterday found themselves among a shortlist of 12 albums chosen by an independent judging panel, which includes musicians, producers, presenters and music journalists.
This year's Nationwide Mercury Prize, which is open to all genres of music, will be announced on September 9.
