Take a family trip to the past
Forty years ago the opening of Fishbourne Roman Palace to the general public was a historic event.
For the first time visitors were able to come and see for themselves the remains of a substantial Roman palace with its remarkable mosaics.
On Saturday, May 31 a fleet of 1960s cars will welcome you to Fishbourne Roman Palace where you can join us to celebrate the opening and take a trip back to 1968 to see how the archaeologists worked to uncover the world famous mosaics.
Lots of hands-on activities, such as using a potter's wheel to make a Roman pot or trying to locate buried artefacts with a metal detector, will keep you and your family entertained. You can even test your knowledge on the quiz trail in search of 1960s memories.
In the Collections Discovery Centre have a look at our gallery of images from the opening ceremony and
participate in a prize draw for a family ticket to a private view of the
conservator at work.
Steam train rides, live music and a picnic bag from our Café, to eat in the Roman Gardens, will make this a
memorable day for all.
Why not come in 60s fancy dress and party 60s style!
