Out and About
The Rockingham
Nestled in the picturesque village of Canada Common on the edge of the New Forest is a real gem of a place.
Away from the main tourist routes
and without much in the way of passing traffic, The Rockingham is obviously attracting plenty of visitors who will
go out of their way to enjoy some
fine food in relaxed surroundings.
It's the perfect place to enjoy a fabulous lunch, followed by a wander around nearby Canada Common.
We arrived during a busy Saturday lunchtime service, but were treated like old friends and given an immediate warm welcome.
The pub has been refurbished in recent years and has a light and airy feel and charming modern décor.
We chose a sunny spot on the outdoor terrace at the front of the pub and enjoyed mixed olives as we perused the menu, which uses local produce wherever possible and changes regularly.
We were looking for a light lunch and found a wonderful selection of baguettes served with fries and a side salad for just £7.50.
I adored my goat's cheese baguette with a tangy tomato and olive pesto.
It was bursting with food and flavour
and really hit the spot.
My partner enjoyed the very different mango mayonnaise served with his tasty cajun chicken baguette.
I look forward to returning to enjoy the very reasonable set lunchtime menu again soon though. Two courses are priced at £9.95 and three courses are priced at £11.95 on a menu which includes such delights as crab pate, smoked salmon, Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon.
A very extensive menu also includes
a la carte favourites, fine wine and a good selection of ales.
Our bill came to just £23.10 for two light lunches and soft drinks.
We set off happily full for a stroll on the common. The Rockingham really does come into its own on sunny days where it is a wonderful retreat, but I can't imagine a hearty winter meal around a glowing wood fire in winter isn't too bad either! LR
